HISBE Food

Brighton-born “rebel supermarket” HISBE is opening a store in Worthing town centre, on Saturday 16th January 2021, and offering people the opportunity to win free shopping at HISBE for themselves and for local people in need.
HISBE is a supermarket on a busy Brighton high street, that offers a full range of fresh food and groceries, household and bodycare products, but does things very differently to your average Tesco’s. They focus on local produce, Sussex suppliers, packaging-free goods and eco-friendly brands. Staff are paid the Real Living Wage and, of every £1 that goes through the tills, suppliers get 68 pence.
On 28th February 2020 HISBE signed a lease on a new retail premises at 38 Portland Road in Worthing, where the Polish shop used to be. They planned to open their second store in May, but within two weeks the Coronavirus changed that. However, post-lockdown HISBE has an opening date and has launched a crowdfunder, inviting people to support the new store and win free shopping for themselves and others.

Ruth Anslow, who launched HISBE’s pilot store in Brighton in 2013 with her sister Amy and their friend Jack, is excited about opening their long-awaited second store: -
“These are uncertain times, and people might say we’re a bit bonkers to be opening a new store in the middle of a pandemic! But even before Covid hit, we had spent 18 months looking for the right place. So, ever since we found it, we can’t wait to get going....
Our interest in Worthing started when my sister moved here and declared that HISBE would be “right at home” in Worthing. We didn’t know the town well at first but have found a unique mix of traditional local pride and forward-thinking spirit here, that comes through from the community, the businesses and the council. From talking to local people, we were excited to discover its proud history with food, land and sea, its thriving independent business sector and a growing buzz of action on local food and sustainability.
And then it seemed like fate when someone at the council told me the town motto is, ‘From the land plenty and from the sea health.’ That’s right up our street - and we can’t wait to be of service to this town!”

No One is Immune to Climate Change - Banner Drop

Worthing Extinction Rebellion (XR) performed a thought and action provoking banner drop at 6am this morning on Worthing Pier. XR said "The world is way off track to stop run away climate and ecological breakdown. Worthing is a seaside town and sea rise levels are predicted to flood many areas. We must Act Now."

Link here: https://coastal.climatecentral.org/map/11/-0.3506/51.0052/?theme=sea_level_rise&map_type=coastal_dem_comparison&contiguous=true&elevation_model=best_available&forecast_year=2030&pathway=rcp85&percentile=p95&return_level=return_level_1&slr_model=kopp_2014

Worthing XR state that most Paris Climate Agreement pledges have been broken. "We will pass 1.5' warming in the next five years and the governments own Climate Change Committee report predicts a 4' warming by 2100. A world not fit for habitation by any living species."

They urge that the catastrophic effects on human society and the natural world may spiral out of control if the Climate and Ecological Emergency is not addressed in time, including
⦁ Biodiversity Loss
⦁ Sea level rise
⦁ Desertification
⦁ Wildfires
⦁ Water shortage
⦁ Crop failure
⦁ Extreme weather

The combined result of these destabilising events will be:
⦁ Millions displaced
⦁ Disease
⦁ Increased risk of wars and conflicts
⦁ Impacts on human rights

The aim of the banner drop is to provoke thought and action amongst Worthing people because "We are in a planetary emergency. We must immediately begin improving carbon absorption, reduce emissions and stop the harm we are causing to the natural world." They state that "The task before us is daunting but we have proved big changes can be made during the Covid19 pandemic. We must Act Now."

EYE announce their 1st Virtual Eco-Summit on the 2nd July, at 10:00

A message from The E.Y.E. Project (Eco, Young & Engaged) to all Eco-Leaners and Eco-warriors, aged 5 to 16 years.
EYE are proud to announce our 1st Virtual Eco-Summit on the 2nd July, at 10:00

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCykgyPeAoVRcGW8DnYQGA6g?view_as=subscriber

In these challenging times of social distancing, E.Y.E.’s scheduled large gathering of school learners at the 13th Worthing& Adur Eco-Summit on the 2nd of July has had to take on a different approach, seizing the opportunity to go virtual.

The Eco-Summit is viewed as a highlight to all school eco-committees across the Worthing & Adur area. Historically we invite participants through school eco-leads, hosting over 200 school pupils aged 5-16 from across the Worthing & Adur area. Coming together for a day of fun whilst learning about the preservation of our environment through eco themed workshops and activities. Emphasising the role young people have towards a more sustainable way of life. Empowering their green journey and future actions.

Not to disappoint schools and children that had already registered, we are able to offer this exciting and experimental Eco-Summit approach to our wider interest groups; including those currently learning from home.

E.Y.E. have selected from our network of nationally recognised environmentalist groups, a range of eco themed workshops. Supporting us at this event are; Sussex wildlife Trust, Sustrans, Marine Conservation Society, Sussex Green Living, Worthing Food Pioneers, Shoreham Port, South Downs National Park and Worthing Honey Collective.

Including a special opening message from Nicola Peel (Environmentalist campaigner) all the way from her lockdown in Los Cedros Biological Reserve- Andean cloud forest of the Choco region of Ecuador.

In these times of pausing and observing the wonders of our recovering environment, we hope you attended our event and take inspirational action. The imminent period of relaxing social restrictions and when the word lockdown is in the past, we would recommend that the ‘getting back to normal’ translates into eco actions for giving ourselves a ‘fresh start’ regarding everyone’s impact upon our one and only planet.

Celebrate our ongoing challenge to provide Eco-leaner as part of the mainstream curriculum, by participating in our 1st Virtual Eco-Summit, 2nd July 10:00.
