Discussions underway to agree new administration to lead Worthing Borough Council

The leaders of the different political groups on Worthing Borough Council have begun discussions to determine who will lead the council this year.

No group gained a majority of councillors on the council after this year’s local elections so talks have now begun between the group leaders, facilitated by council officers.

Those discussions will decide which group or groups should lead the administration for 2026/27. It is hoped that agreement can be reached in the coming days.

In the meantime the council’s chief executive, Paul Brewer, will take any significant decisions that are needed so that work to support Worthing’s communities can continue as usual.

Of the 13 seats contested in this year’s borough council elections, 6 Green candidates were elected along with 5 Reform UK candidates, 1 Labour and 1 Liberal Democrat.

The results mean that the council is now made up of 15 Labour members, 8 Greens, 6 Conservatives, 5 Reform UK members, 2 Worthing Community Independents and 1 Liberal Democrat.

The lack of any single party securing the 19 seats needed to have a majority on the council has led to the parties having to decide how they should work to form an administration.

The council will provide updates on this process over the coming days. The full council will meet on Tuesday 19th May to elect a new leader of Worthing and a new mayor of the borough.

The Greens and Worthing Community Independents have joined together to form a new group on the council called the Green and Independent Alliance. Councillor Claire Hunt is the group leader, with Councillor Carl Walker the deputy leader.
